Soft Tissue Therapy

My goal is to relieve your pain
Soft tissue therapy is a more helpful name for Sports & Remedial Massage, because the techniques that I use are designed to assess, treat and rehabilitate any musculoskeletal problems you may be suffering with; whether sports-related or not. The following can all be improved with soft tissue therapy:
  • Injuries
  • Common postural pain
  • Muscular aches & pains
  • Lack of flexibility
  • Restricted movement

Treatment will be based on your specific complaint but will employ a combination of:
  • Hands-on deep tissue massage
  • Assisted stretching techniques

Some problems may require the use of techniques that work at a neuromuscular level to reset dysfunctional muscles. These include:
  • Trigger point massage
  • Soft tissue release
  • Muscle energy techniques known as post-isometric relaxation and reciprocal inhibition.

Acupuncture

For Musculoskeletal Problems
Acupuncture is a tool of Oriental medicine and works on the principal that the body’s energy flows like an electrical circuit, a blockage in which can result in pain. Acupuncture works by applying needles to specific points that have a beneficial effect in the pain. Because needles can be applied to points away from the area of discomfort, acupuncture can even be used to treat painful and acute conditions.

I decided to learn acupuncture for musculoskeletal injuries as an additional way to be able to treat certain conditions. My training was with the renowned Bernard Nolan, who has over 30 years experience in acupuncture and has worked with major UK football clubs and has treated world record holding and paralympic athletes. It is a specific qualification open to Level 5 sports massage therapists (the highest level of training available), osteopaths, physiotherapists and chiropractors and is taught at the Oxford University Sports Complex.

I use acupuncture as an additional part of my treatments. If you have multiple areas of concern it allows me to treat one area of the body with acupuncture while massaging another which results in a fuller, more comprehensive treatment.

Effects of acupuncture:

•Pain relief
•Relief of tight tissue; muscles, fascia, ligaments and tendons
•Relief of general superficial symptoms
•Improved wellbeing
•Improved relaxation

Conditions that respond well to acupuncture:

•Frozen shoulder
•Plantar fasciitis

Acupuncture will not always be the most appropriate course of treatment and therefore I do not charge an additional rate on my treatments when using acupuncture. That way you can be assured we will only use it if it is the right treatment method for your problem.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Cleansing, relaxing, pain-relieving and enhancing the immune system
Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD) is a  very gentle form of massage which has a number of health benefits.

The body's lymphatic system works alongside the circulatory system. One of its main functions is immune defence and it also works to remove waste products, cellular debris and bacteria from the body.

Due to illness and lifestyle, the lymphatic system can become 'sluggish'. MLD techniques facilitate the removal of metabolic wastes, excess water, toxins, bacteria, large protein molecules, and foreign substances from tissue via the lymph vessels and the venous capillaries. MLD also relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, reduces pain, and enhances the activity of the immune system.

It is effective in the treatment of a wide variety of problems including:

• Oedema
• Arthritis
• Inflammatory disorders
• Skin disorders
• Headache
• Sinus congestion
• Sprains and aches
• Stress
• Digestive disorders
• Before and after surgery to remove tissue congestion and minimise scar formation.

It is particularly useful as part of post-mastectomy therapy, to reduce oedema and fibrosis, and to relieve pain and tension. With agreement from your specialist, MLD can also be used soon after active cancer treatment when regular massage is often still contraindicated.
